A Picture of Jesus’ Surrender:  Jesus’ Surrender to the Father’s Will and to the Incarnation

“And He said, ‘Abba, Father! All things are possible for You. Take this cup away from Me. Nevertheless, not what I will, but what You will.’”

Mark 14:36

“Make your own attitude that of Christ Jesus, who, existing in the form of God, did not consider equality with God as something to be used for His own advantage.  Instead He emptied Himself by assuming the form of a slave, taking on the likeness of men.  And when He had come as a man in His external form, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death – even to death on a cross.”

Philippians 2:5-8

The entire Old Testament looked toward the day He would clothe Himself in human flesh and become a picture of God’s radiance for all. That is exactly what He did. His deity and His humanity together shout the glorious gospel message.

He did what He said He would.

He did what no other could.

His is a power beyond our own.

It is remarkable.

Jesus, fully God and fully man, chose to serve. He emptied Himself and laid down His rightful glory for a time to accomplish our salvation. He set aside His comfort to carry a cross that was not His own. Surrendering to the Father’s will, He yielded Himself and bridged all of eternity.

Oh, how we need to fall at the foot of His cross daily.

We are human with much to learn about laying down and letting go. We do not always welcome the idea of surrender. We would rather cling to control or retain a safekeeping out of what we offer. When we let go, God does more than we thought possible.

Surrender is not surrender unless it fully is.

The Son of Man came to serve and be a ransom for all. He held nothing back. Before creation, Jesus saw the garden and the cross where He, Word made flesh, would lay down His own life in order to declare our eternity.

He has dealt bountifully with us.

He did what He said He would.

He did what no other could.

Surrender looks like Jesus.

He must increase, and we must decrease.

He is our greatest hallelujah.

Our best is yet to come.

We’re All In.

o Forgive us for holding too tightly to what we think is ours and not fully letting go.

o Thank You for Your example of surrender and how You loved us well.

o Help us follow You and truly get ourselves out of the way.

o Give us the opportunity to open our hands and help us be courageous to follow You.

o We pray that You use us in our community and world for Your gospel and Your kingdom.
